A smaller room benefits from a clear purpose. Decide whether it mainly needs to support reading, guests, work or family time. Then refresh it in stages so each change answers a real need.
First: repair and clear
List loose handles, scuffed trim and small wall blemishes. Resolve the simple maintenance jobs before decorating around them. Clear walking routes and remove pieces that make doors or drawers difficult to use.
Second: try the arrangement
Measure the furniture you are keeping and mark a possible layout on paper. Check door swings and access to outlets without running cords across walking paths. Move lighter pieces first and get help with heavy items. Live with the arrangement for a few days.
Third: add the finishing layer
Choose one area to draw the eye, such as artwork above a console. Repeat a color already present in the room with a cushion or textile. Leave useful surfaces available instead of filling every spot with decoration.
Know when you are done
The room should be easier to use and comfortable to spend time in. If the remaining problem is damaged trim, difficult doors or a wall repair, put that work on a project list rather than buying another accessory to cover it.
